Personalized License Plate Auction Generates $200,000 for Two Children’s Hospitals

PHNOM PENH: The Ministry of Public Works and Transport donated $100,000 USD each to Kantha Bopha Hospital and the National Children's Hospital, using funds generated from the sale of personalized license plates.

The $200,000 donation was handed over to the two national hospitals by the Minister of Public Works and Transport, Senior Minister Sun Chanthol, on the morning of June 21. He confirmed that the money for the hospitals had been raised at an auction of personalized license plates, which took place at an event celebrating the three year anniversary of their launch, held at Wat Botum Vatey Park on March 7, 2023.

This is the second large donation from the ministry to Kantha Bopha Hospital, having donated $200,000 in 2020 as well from the sale of customizable license plates.

As of May, the Ministry of Public Works had sold around 19,000 personalized license plates totalling $33 million USD since they started offering them on January 7, 2020. It also sold 228,000 special plates totalling $62 million in revenue. The special plates are particular to the owner’s province and allow them to choose their own number.

Senior Minister Sun Chantol said that the sale of customizable license plates had earned $95 million dollars in revenue for the state, some of which has been donated to the Cambodian Red Cross, the Kantha Bopha Children’s Hospital and the military.
